My parents had some screens made from that stuff. Yes it did help if my memory is correct. Also, with it being a heaver weave, it is more kid proof. You know, baseballs, etc.

Hi,
We use these external shades: http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects...pSunShades.htm They work well for us -- I think they are quite effective, and would guess the ones you are getting will work as well. You might find some more good DIY cooling ideas here: http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects...ve_cooling.htm Not all applicable to your area, but some may be. Gary |

I have used solar film for 25 years. It works well but, at least for the film I have used, burns to clear after about 10-15 years. At that point it is just clear plastic film. You have to scrape it off, which is much more labor intensive then putting it on, and apply new film.
I have used both silver and bronze color film. I use bronze on front of house and silver on sides and rear of house. The bronze works but I think the silver is better at reducing internal heating. It takes a little learning to install. Most important is alway cut the film size so you have at least a half inch overlap around the window. The bigger the window the more overlap to allow. I have done full sliding glass doors with no problem. I find it better to squirt the window and squirt the film as you are pealing the backing off. By wetting the film as you peal the backing off you avoid having the problem of film folding over on itself and sticking together. When dry it sticks together worst the masking tape. If you get a crease in the film the piece is trash. When wet you can easily pull it back apart. One more thing. If you have any puddy out crops along edge of glass frame, cut them out so nice straight clean edge before applying film. Window must be clean, clean, clean. Having both film and window nice and wet allows you to pull wrinkles out. Then start squeeging out from center. As you progress a lot of water will come out the edges so have a towel ready. Once all squeeged out with no bubbles or wrinkles, you take a box cutter and go around perimeter. Finally squeege edge flat to glass. Last edited by RCinFLA; 08-14-2009 at 03:31 AM. |
